The Camargue, a vast 150,000-hectare paralique wetland, is home to a wealth of animal and plant species. As a regional nature park since 1970 and a biosphere reserve recognized by UNESCO since 1977, it enjoys a high protection status. Since the 19th century, it has been subjected to extensive hydraulic work.
